{"id":10874,"date":"2019-08-15T19:49:10","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T19:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/?p=10874"},"modified":"2019-08-15T19:49:10","modified_gmt":"2019-08-15T19:49:10","slug":"top-countries-environmental-policymaking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/top-countries-environmental-policymaking\/","title":{"rendered":"8 Countries Making Strides in Environmental Policymaking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a landmark<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/sr15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailing the dangers of a global <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.5 \u00b0C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> temperature rise from pre-industrial levels. These include increased occurrence of natural disasters, forced human migration, and loss of ecosystems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t great news, obviously, and it\u2019s easy to feel anxious in the face of global warming. However, anxiety is conducive to action: all over the world, policymakers are pooling their resources to help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and save our planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight countries in particular are making huge waves in environmental policymaking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European countries top the list, implementing incredible programs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/nature\/natura2000\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natura2000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a conservation organization that protects 18 percent of the EU\u2019s land area, and 9.5 percent of its marine territory) and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/circular-economy\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circular Economy Action Plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (adopted in 2015), which emphasizes the need to push towards a life-cycle-driven economy (in which resources are reused as much as possible and residual waste is brought close to zero).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are plenty more exciting initiatives for eco-enthusiasts to gush over \u2014\u00a0let\u2019s look at some of the legislation we hope other key countries around the world adopt in the very near future.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Green-grass-roof-683x512.jpg\" alt=\"Green grass roof of cottage in village of Rysstad in southern Norway.\" class=\"wp-image-10898\"\/><figcaption><em>One of many eco-friendly designs one sees while traversing Norway. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n<h2><b>Norway<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per usual, our Scandinavian overlords top the list. Ranked No.1 on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodcountry.org\/index\/results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Good Country<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> index, Norway is a global leader in environmental protection. More than 80 percent of Norway\u2019s domestic emissions are subject to a mandatory CO2 tax, and the country has a target to reduce GHG emissions by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/en\/topics\/climate-and-environment\/climate\/innsiktsartikler-klima\/norwegian-carbon-credit-procurement-program\/id2415405\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by next year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norway has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.regjeringen.no\/en\/topics\/climate-and-environment\/climate\/climate-and-forest-initiative\/id2000712\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pledged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> up to 3 billion Norwegian Krones per year to help \u201csave the world\u2019s tropical forests while improving the livelihoods of those who live off, in, and near the forests.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because it\u2019s such a leader when it comes to the environment, Norway has partnered with other European countries to lead by example (see: Romania and Portugal below).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Middelgrunden-wind-farm-910x512.jpg\" alt=\"A danish offshore wind farm in Baltic Sea with ship passing in the distance.\" class=\"wp-image-10899\"\/><figcaption><em>Middelgrunden, one of 10 Danish wind farms in the Baltic Sea. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2><b>Denmark<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denmark has ambitiously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/archive-international\/Global\/international\/briefings\/climate\/2014\/BRIEFING-Denmarks-commitment-to-100pct-renewable-energy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">committed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to a fossil-fuel-free, 100-percent renewable energy future by 2050. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture is big business in Denmark, and it indirectly helps provide energy too, with manure, animal fats, and straw used as the basis for biogas and liquid biofuels. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than <a href=\"https:\/\/denmark.dk\/innovation-and-design\/clean-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-thirds<\/a> of Denmark&#8217;s renewable energy comes from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bioenergy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and many Danish power plants are switching from fossil fuels to wood pellets, wood chips, or straw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denmark is also particularly environmentally conscious when it comes to construction. The Danish government implemented a revolutionary <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lse.ac.uk\/GranthamInstitute\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/DENMARK.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building code<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, banning new installation of oil boilers in all houses\u2014while simultaneously encouraging biomass, biogas and solar thermal appliances.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denmark is setting the course for sustainability in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/denmark.dk\/innovation-and-design\/sustainability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shipping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sector as well. Maersk Group, the world\u2019s largest container shipping company and one of the largest companies in Denmark, has prioritized addressing the CO2 impact of shipping (which is expected to grow up to 250 percent by 2050, according to the International Maritime Organisation).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s just throw in one more ridiculous project that Denmark&nbsp; is undertaking: a giant offshore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/denmark.dk\/innovation-and-design\/clean-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wind farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Baltic Sea. The farm is expected to power 600,000 households when construction completes in 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/German-Solar-installation-home-910x512.jpg\" alt=\"Solar installation on a newly built residential home in Germany.\" class=\"wp-image-10900\"\/><figcaption><em>A typical residential solar installation found in Germany.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Germany<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany has plans to become climate-neutral by mid-century thanks to Energiewende, the country\u2019s transition to nuclear and fossil-fuel-free energy. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of 2011, there were 17 nuclear power plants in operation in Germany. By 2022, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschland.de\/en\/topic\/environment\/10-things-germany-is-doing-for-the-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last will have closed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Germany is also green-conscious when it comes to design, creating the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/growth\/industry\/sustainability\/ecodesign_en\" target=\"_blank\">Ecodesign Directive (ErP)<\/a> to regulate products with the worst environmental performance. The initiative is expected to reduce power consumption in the EU by 12 percent by 2020. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">The country is quite picky when it comes to <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/11\/28\/world\/what-in-the-world\/germany-gleefully-leads-list-of-worlds-top-recyclers.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">recycling<\/span><\/a>, too. I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">t\u2019s not uncommon to get dirty looks from neighbors for not sorting through trash. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To better understand Germany&#8217;s progress in the renewable energy sector, I suggest reading this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschland.de\/en\/topic\/environment\/10-things-germany-is-doing-for-the-environment\" target=\"_blank\">list<\/a> of 10 things Germany is doing to protect the environment and this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutschland.de\/en\/topic\/environment\/10-things-germany-is-doing-for-the-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide<\/a> to Germany\u2019s Energiewende program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Swiss-hydroelectric-plant-768x512.jpg\" alt=\"Inside the tunnel of a Swiss hydroelectric plant in G\u00f6schenen, Switzerland\" class=\"wp-image-10897\"\/><figcaption><em>A hydroelectric plant in G\u00f6schenen, Uri, Switzerland.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Switzerland<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Like Germany, Switzerland is amid a nuclear energy phase-out of their own. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bfe.admin.ch\/bfe\/en\/home\/policy\/energy-strategy-2050.html\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Strategy 2050<\/a>, implemented after the Fukushima reactor disaster in 2011, mandates that all Swiss nuclear plants must be shut down\u2014not replaced\u2014at the end of their safe operating life.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">So what are the Swiss using to power their country? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Water. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Hydropower accounts for <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worldenergy.org\/data\/resources\/country\/switzerland\/hydropower\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">60 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\"> of domestic electricity production. On 27 May 2019, Portugal signed the Portuguese Environment, Climate Change and Low-Carbon Economy program\u2014a \u20ac24 million fund aimed to support developments towards a circular economy. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Portugal also houses the Fundo Ambiental (Environmental Fund), which began operating in 2017. <\/span>In that year alone, they invested over \u20ac41 million in projects related to climate change, circular economy, nature conservation, and environmental awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Ljubljana-Slovenia-902x512.jpg\" alt=\"The Ljubljanica River winds through Ljubljana, Slovenia on a sunny afternoon.\" class=\"wp-image-10894\"\/><figcaption><em>The Ljubljanica River, Ljubljana, Slovenia<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Slovenia<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">In 2016, Slovenia was declared the world\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sloveniatimes.com\/slovenia-declared-world-s-first-green-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"first green country (opens in a new tab)\">first green country<\/a>, based on an assessment by Dutch organization Green Destinations. Its capital, Ljubljana, was also dubbed Europe\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/europeangreencapital\/index_en.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">greenest capital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\"> in 2016.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Since issuing the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mkgp.gov.si\/fileadmin\/mkgp.gov.si\/pageuploads\/zakonodaja\/varstvo_okolja\/zvo_1b_en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Environmental Protection Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\"> in 2008, vast swaths of the country have been given conservation status. <\/span>(This is important as forests cover nearly 60 percent of the country!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Additionally, Slovenia is developing a green model for tourism. The <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slovenia.info\/uploads\/zelena_shema\/2019_05_sto_-_zsst_kratek_pregled_ang_-_pages_press.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Green Scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\"> labels many of the city\u2019s most popular attractions, accommodations, and parks as either Bronze, Silver, or Gold destinations for environmental sustainability. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Check out this <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slovenia.info\/en\/business\/green-scheme-of-slovenian-tourism\" target=\"_blank\">interactive map<\/a> that helps potential tourists locate the greenest destinations.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hotelsbyday.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Garzo\u0301n-region-Uruguay-767x512.jpg\" alt=\"The lush Uruguayan region of Garz\u00f3n filled with high-technology agricultural, livestock businesses, and of course, wind turbines.\" class=\"wp-image-10895\"\/><figcaption><em>The Uruguayan region of Garzo\u0301n is a hub for high-tech agriculture and green practices. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Uruguay<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Uruguay is the unsung hero of renewable energy. Being one of the smallest countries in South America, it relies heavily on oil imports, which can get very expensive, very quickly. As electricity costs began to rise, Uruguay decided to tackle the problem internally, by self-generating their electricity. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">The Uruguay Wind Energy Programme (UWEP) was started, and since then, 97\u2013100 percent of Uruguay\u2019s energy comes from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.export.gov\/article?id=Uruguay-Renewable-Energy-Equipment\" target=\"_blank\">renewable sources<\/a>. Uruguay also has major plans to harness solar energy, in a project called <\/span><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energiasolar.gub.uy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Energiasolar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">There you have it: the top eight countries making vast strides in environmental policymaking. (North America: take notes!) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\" class=\"tadv-format-panel\">Now &#8212; while the future of our planet rests in the hands of policymakers, to get these last to act, we (the people!) need to be armed with knowledge.
