The celebration of Earth Day began on April 22, 1970. It sprang out of the UNESCO conference of 1969, at the behest of peace activist John McConnell. The first Earth Day poster was made by the artist Robert Rauschenberg. His work commemorated what the day is about: educating people about the systematic destruction of the planet. The same year Earth Day was launched, President Richard Nixon also launched the Environmental Protection Agency. Touted as the largest Earth Day celebration in the country, Dallas is holding their three-day Earth Day Texas event at Fair Park. Starting on April 21, this hoedown mixes environmental organizations, businesses, academic institutions, governmental agencies with live music, sustainable beer and delicious food. There will also be movie screenings, lectures, and interactive programming. Everything is bigger in Texas, including this super-sized multi-media Earth Day extravaganza. Fort Collins celebrations<\/h5>\n

On Saturday, April 22, the Civic Center Park in Fort Collins will celebrate Earth Day by giving back.
