Neighborhood

  • Diverse Dining – There are over 175 brews available at the Hessen Haus, a German beer hall that offers global comfort food washed down with European beer. Or you can visit the RoCA bistro and enjoy New American fare and cocktails in chic surroundings. Sleek decor and Japanese cuisine is served up at W-Tao Sushi, whilst Italian classics and new dishes, some influenced by North Africa, are on the menu at Lucca. Other styles in the area include Cajun, Vietnamese, and French.

  • Flora and Fauna – To the south of the hotel is Blank Park Zoo, a wildlife center that features a train and petting zoo, plus exotic residents such as flamboyant flamingos, ancient tortoises, and the hyper-cute red pandas. Head north and you’ll find the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden, which showcases seasonal flora in outdoor gardens and within a geodesic dome. You can wander the gardens solo or take a guided tour, and be sure to check the calendar to see what special events are on, and when.

  • Artistic Delights – The Pappajohn Sculpture Park is a great place to take a leisurely stroll and admire the sculptures. The park is furnished with picnic spots and chess tables, for those with keen wits. The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates is housed in a beautiful structure, and is a museum dedicated to commemorating the progress made in the struggle against global hunger.

  • Marvelous Museums – The State Historical Museum of Iowa exhibits over a thousand items  from Iowa’s history and is crammed with interesting snippets of information. There are artifacts from the Civil War, the modern world, and pre-European era. Nearby is the Iowa Hall of Pride, an interactive museum which focuses on distinguished citizens of Iowa.
