San Jose, California
The cutting edge city of San Jose is the beating heart of Silicon Valley, and there’s a lot for a day visitor to experience. From the great museums and numerous parks, to the spooky surroundings of the Winchester Mystery House, give our recommendations a look to find out what’s what.
Your San Jose Day Stay Guide
- Food – There’s a large menu of restaurants from which to pick, including Back A Yard Caribbean Grill for Jamaican cuisine, Vegetarian House, which offers vegan fare with Western and Eastern influences, and Taurinus Brazilian Steak House. There are plenty more vegan establishments, as well as Greek, Italian, seafood and more besides.
- Magnificent Museums – History buffs are in for a treat at the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, which houses the most extensive collection of Egyptian artifacts in the western USA. Jewelry and bronze tools, plus displays explaining Egyptian burial practices, await, as does a walk-through tomb. There are many other great museums, including the interactive Children’s Discovery Museum, suitable for kids of all ages, and the Triton Museum of Art, home to art old and new with an emphasis on local artists.
- Winchester Mystery House – If you’re in the mood for something kooky, the Winchester Mystery House might be just what you’re after. This ancient mansion is rumored to be haunted by ghosts galore, and has a staircase leading to nowhere. It’s now a landmark tourist attraction, and the setting for a number of fictional works.
- Wildlife Refuge – San Jose is famous for its high-tech approach but if you want to get back in touch with nature the city is also home to part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This large nature preserve has a wide variety of native plants and animals, as well as migrating birds, and is a great spot to get away from it all and enjoy a pleasant stroll.
