A Quintet Of Quaint Skokie Facts

  1. Skokie is technically a village, despite having a population exceeding 60,000.
  2. This has led the settlement to promote itself as “The World’s Largest Village.”
  3. Skokie’s name comes from the Potawatomi word for “marsh”.
  4. Despite its separate status, Skokie’s streets partially continue the Chicago grid, and the village is part of the Chicago Transit Authority area.
  5. The village’s original name was Niles Centre (later changed to Niles Center), but as an adjacent city was called Niles this was deemed a confusing name, and in a 1940 referendum the new name Skokie was chosen (defeating the alternative Devonshire).
